The Wichita Public Schools Security Services Department was founded in 1965. Security Services is a team of well-trained men and women who provide professional safety and security services to the 48,000 diverse students in the Wichita metropolitan area.  Today it is made up of 40 officers.  The Security Services Department is the largest school security department in the State of Kansas.  The officers attend required basic training, advanced training and annual in-service training.  Officers are authorized to enforce applicable state and local laws, and policies of the Wichita Public Schools.  Their services include patrolling the schools, crisis intervention, metal detection scanning, safety audits, investigations, surveillance and an extensive incident reporting system.  Security Officers respond to approximately 9,000 calls for assistance and prepare over 2,000 reports annually.  The Security Services Department strives to be a professional part of the Wichita law enforcement community.

It’s a big job, three shifts working 24 hours a day, seven days a week, 365 days a year, inside and outside, in over 100 school district buildings.  The officers are also responsible for providing security and metal detection scanning at all major athletic events.  On a typical weekday, Security Services officers are responsible for a population equal to that of a small sized American city.  The people served by the department include students, staff, parents and other visitors – all of whom expect and deserve a safe environment in which to learn and work.  It is an assignment that calls for professionals who take pride in doing their job well.

This department is made up of two sections:

Security Patrol Officers:  These officers patrol campuses on foot and in vehicles. They respond to a wide variety of calls for service, which include, assistance with disruptive students; theft reporting; reports of suspicious activities and individuals; as well as, alarms that are received through our Security Communications Department and Sedgwick County 911 Emergency Communications.

Security Site Based Officers:  These officers are responsible for the security in seven comprehensive high schools, four special day schools and one magnet high school serving over 10,000 students.  Security officers receive specialized training in such areas as first aid, report writing, conflict resolution, diversity and other issues related to security and protection.

All Security Services Officers work closely with school staff and administrators, the Wichita Police Department, School Resources Officers, the Sedgwick County Sheriff’s Office, the court system, Juvenile Probation, Sedgwick County Emergency Management and the Wichita Fire Department.  This collaboration embodies the departments’ motto of “Teaming for Safe Schools”.
