SAFETY TIPS FOR PARENTS
YOU AND YOUR 'TWEEN

Kids in this age group (9 through 13) may be home alone for longer periods of time.  Here are a few safety procedures to discuss with your child:

  • Never tell anyone that an adult is not present or that you are alone.

  • Keep all doors and windows locked and the garage door closed.

  • Do not open the door even for someone you know.

  • Don’t open the door for someone to use the telephone for any reason.

  • Keep the radio or television on when you are alone.

  • If the phone rings, do not tell people that you are home alone.  Have a code with your parents so you will know if they are the caller – let the answering machine pick up and screen the calls.  Don’t talk to strangers on the phone!

  • If you do answer the phone and someone says bad things, hang up!  Don’t talk to them.

  • If you see a stranger hanging around the house, tell an adult or call 911.

  • Never go outside to investigate suspicious noises or activities.

  • If you feel scared or uncomfortable, talk to your parents or a trusted adult.
