SAFETY TIPS FOR PARENTS
WHEN YOUR CHILD IS A PEDESTRIAN

It is important for children to be alert and know the safety rules for pedestrians.  Here are some good discussion points:

  • If there are no sidewalks, walk facing traffic.

  • Stop, look, and listen when approaching an intersection.

  • Look left, right, then left again before crossing the street.

  • Stop at the curb before crossing the street.

  • Cross the street only at the corner.

  • If there is a street light, cross only when the light is green.  Do not cross on a yellow light.

  • Watch for cars that might be turning.

  • Do not walk between parked cars.

  • If a ball or toy rolls into the street, tell at adult.

  • Walk with an adult if possible.  If that is not possible, always walk with another young person.

  • If you walk to and from school, walk the same route so your parents will know where to find you.

  • If the weather gets bad when you are walking to or from school, walk slowly and carefully so you won’t fall or get hurt.

  • NEVER ride with a stranger, even if the weather is very bad!
