As part of our
cooperative efforts with the
Wichita
Police Department, the district continues to coordinate these
programs. Since 1978, officers from the Wichita Police
Department have made thousands of classroom presentations that
increase student awareness of citizen's rights and responsibilities
under the law, while fostering positive attitudes toward police
officers and law enforcement in general. Over 40,000 student
contacts were made by these officers last year.
D.A.R.E.,
a nationally recognized drug awareness program, was introduced in the
Wichita Public Schools during the 1992-93 school year to provide
alcohol and drug prevention information to all fifth-grade students.
The
School Resource Officer (SRO) Program places a police officer in each
middle and high school to serve as a mentor, counselor, educator and
to enforce the law on school grounds.
