SAFETY TIPS FOR PARENTS
BULLYPROOFING YOUR CHILD
If you suspect that your child is being bullied,
- Listen carefully.
- Take the problem seriously – be careful not to over or
under-react.
- Encourage your child to talk about what’s happening.
- Document the events and check out the facts.
Strategies to help your child include:
- Reminding your child that hitting back is not an option.
- Encouraging your child to walk away and ignore the bully.
- Suggesting that he/she stick with friends when the bully is
around.
- Trying to remain calm and not letting the bully see him/her
cry.
- Role playing responses for threatening situations by saying
loudly

“Keep your hands off me!”
-
“I’m not moving no matter what you
say – now cut it out!”
-
“I don’t like that – leave me
alone!”
- Encouraging your child to speak with the teacher, principal,
or school counselor.
If a bullying issue is school-related and continues to be
unresolved, you should notify the teacher or principal. Your child
deserves to be safe and feel safe!
