SAFETY TIPS FOR PARENTS
BULLYPROOFING YOUR CHILD

If you suspect that your child is being bullied,

  • Listen carefully.
  • Take the problem seriously – be careful not to over or under-react.
  • Encourage your child to talk about what’s happening.
  • Document the events and check out the facts.

Strategies to help your child include:

  • Reminding your child that hitting back is not an option.
  • Encouraging your child to walk away and ignore the bully.
  • Suggesting that he/she stick with friends when the bully is around.
  • Trying to remain calm and not letting the bully see him/her cry.
  • Role playing responses for threatening situations by saying loudly
  • “Keep your hands off me!”

  • “I’m not moving no matter what you say – now cut it out!”

  • “I don’t like that – leave me alone!”

  • Encouraging your child to speak with the teacher, principal, or school counselor.

If a bullying issue is school-related and continues to be unresolved, you should notify the teacher or principal.  Your child deserves to be safe and feel safe!
