SAFETY TIPS FOR PARENTS
WHEN YOUR CHILD IS BABY-SITTING

There is important information that both you and your child need
to know before he/she agrees to baby-sit.
For you:
- Know the adults who ask your child to baby-sit. Do not let
him/her accept a job from strangers.
- Be sure you have the address and phone number where your
child will be.
- Know the phone number where the parents can be reached in
case of emergency.
For your child:
- Have a “code” ring for the phone so you will know if the
parents are calling OR let the answering machine pick up and
screen the calls. Make sure to agree on a plan before the
parents leave the house.
- Get the name and phone number of a friend or neighbor and
the family doctor.
- Know the address of the house where you are baby-sitting in
case there’s an emergency.
- Always stay inside the house unless you have permission to
take the children outside.
- Do not tell any callers that you are the baby-sitter and are
alone with the children. Explain that an adult is unable to
come to the phone right now.
- If the house has a security system, find out how to use it.
- Turn on an outside light.
- Locate a fire extinguisher and all smoke alarms.
- Know where first aid supplies are stored.
- Stay out of closets, drawers, and personal spaces.
- Don’t tie up the phone talking to your friends.
- Don’t allow your friends to visit while you are
baby-sitting.
