P7250 SCHOOL SECURITY PERSONNEL
BOARD POLICY:
The school district shall employ such School Security personnel, pursuant to state law, as shall be necessary to aid and supplement law enforcement agencies, which give service to Unified School District 259. (KSA 72-8222)
Administrative Implemental Procedures:
1. The primary duties shall be to:
a. Protect school district property, pupils, teachers, and other employees together with the property of such persons on or about any school property or while attending or located at the site of any school sponsored function; and
b. Aid all general law enforcement agents in conducting their duties in buildings or on grounds of Unified School District 259 in accordance with Board policies.
2. Designated security personnel shall be trained in accordance with Board policies and procedures which said policies and procedures shall be paramount in directing their activities.
3. Security personnel shall be screened, selected, trained, evaluated, and supervised by the Director of Safety Services. Security personnel in the schools shall be selected and supervised collaboratively by the Director of Safety Services and the principal of the school assigned. The principal shall have administrative responsibility for the daily functioning of their assigned security personnel. The Director of Safety Services Department shall be responsible for the professional standards and training of all security officers.
4. Security personnel shall be responsible for submitting written reports to the Security Services Office at the School Service Center on all incidents within the scope of their area of responsibility as defined by the Security Incident Reporting System Procedures for Reporting.
5. School security personnel shall carry firearms only with direct authorization of the Superintendent of Schools.
6. All new security personnel shall receive 80 hours of security training by the Wichita Police Department and be issued a certificate by said department prior to performing their duties. The Director of Safety Services Department may temporarily waive this requirement should there be undue delay in the scheduling of such training.
7. Security Personnel shall conduct metal detection scanning of buildings at the request of building administration and with the approval of the Director of Safety Services Department.
8. In the event of a crisis incident, the building principal shall notify the Director of Safety Services of the incident and implement the school's crisis plan. When notified of a building crisis, the Director of Safety Services will activate a district wide crisis response team to respond to the scene of the crisis. Upon arrival at the crisis scene, the Director of Safety Services shall direct the school district's response to the crisis incident.
