P1463 PUPIL DISCIPLINE AND STAFF RESPONSIBILITIES

BOARD POLICY:

Maintenance of discipline and pupil control and pupil adherence to school regulations shall be the responsibility of the total school staff. Action taken should be consistent with Board policies and state statutes. Educational programs should be provided which are designed to develop pupil awareness of the consequences of one’s actions.

Administrative Implemental Procedures:

1.      The total school staff is expected to maintain proper school atmosphere. In this regard, teachers’ responsibilities extend beyond their own classrooms and their particular assignment of pupils. Pupils who refuse to comply with reasonable requests of a teacher discharging this responsibility will be subject to appropriate disciplinary action.

2.      When, in the judgment of a teacher, a pupil requires referral to other district employed professional personnel or specialist(s), the teachers shall so inform the principal or immediate supervisor. The principal or immediate supervisor shall arrange as soon as possible for a conference, which includes the principal, the teacher, and appropriate specialist(s) to discuss the problem and to decide upon appropriate steps for its resolution.

3.      School personnel may use reasonable force to repel an attack, to protect other persons, to prevent the destruction of property, or to prevent any illegal overt act on the part of any pupil.

4.      When pupils become involved in either illegal or disruptive behavior, in or on school premises other than where the pupil attends, those incidents shall be reported by the principal to the appropriate law enforcement agencies in accordance with the policy entitled School Safety and Security Incident Reporting.

5.      Lawful custodians are expected to be involved in assisting the school staff to effect a meaningful and positive solution to their child’s behavioral problems.

6.      Corporal punishment is not an acceptable form of disciplinary action. When reasonable efforts by the staff and lawful custodians fail to correct the pupil’s unacceptable behavior; the principal may temporarily suspend the pupil in accordance with the policy entitled Suspension and/or Expulsion of Pupils.
