P1361 RESPONSIBILITY OF SCHOOL PERSONNEL FOR PUPILS EN ROUTE TO AND FROM SCHOOL
BOARD POLICY:
School personnel cooperate with parents and civil authorities to maintain proper pupil conduct and ensure the safety of pupils; however, they are neither legally liable nor legally responsible for pupils en route to and from school if the pupils walk or furnish their own transportation. Board policies relating to bus transportation are applicable while pupils are under the supervision of a school bus driver.
Administrative Implemental Procedures:
1. School personnel teach pedestrian and bicycle safety and work to gain the cooperation of pupils in observing safety rules while riding bicycles or walking to school.
2. The community should be informed concerning the school’s safety program.
3. The principal, staff, and the safety chairperson of the Parent-Teacher Association, or other community group, cooperate in promoting safety for all pupils.
4. Pupil Safety Patrols may be utilized to provide safety at selected crossings.
5. High School principals are authorized to impose fines in order to enforce vehicular traffic and parking regulations. (See policy entitled Vehicular Traffic–Regulations and Procedures.)
