P1342 EMERGENCY AUTHORITY FOR PRINCIPALS
BOARD POLICY:
In the event of certain emergencies involving action or inaction by groups of pupils which threaten to disrupt peace and order or normal operation of the school program, the building principal has full authority to request assistance from law enforcement officials.
Administrative Implemental Procedures:
1. The building principal is responsible for assessing the seriousness of the emergency. In the event that violence or serious disruption of the school program is anticipated, the principal has full authority to call police officials. School district security should be alerted when police have been called.
2. The Superintendent of Schools and other line offices will be notified immediately by the building principal whenever such an emergency occurs.
3. Police who are summoned in such an emergency will be responsible directly to the police officer in charge who will coordinate police efforts with those of school authorities.
a. As long as the physical presence of police officers, for a short period of time, enables the principal to continue school operation through regular policies and procedures, the principal will continue to retain ultimate authority over the student body.
b. In the event the principal finds he/she can no longer maintain an atmosphere of safety or control through administrative procedures, the principal may temporarily grant full authority to the police officer in charge to take what action the officer deems necessary to restore peace and order.
c. Whenever the principal, after conferring with the police officer in charge, feels that order has been sufficiently reestablished for the resumption of normal school operation, the principal will again assume full responsibility
