P1308 SAFETY, SCHOOL SAFETY PATROLS
BOARD POLICY:
Establishment and operation of school safety patrols are the responsibility
of the principal. The operation of a patrol has as its prime purpose the safety
of children. A patrol's ultimate goal should be safety education rather than
safety enforcement.
Administrative Implemental Procedures:
1. School safety patrols are used at crossings adjacent to the school building and at other locations when unusual situations require placing patrols at greater distances from the building.
2. Selection and training of patrol members and operation of school patrols should be carried out in accordance with Wichita Police Department policies, state statutes and their interpretations, and School Traffic Safety Policies and Procedures.
3. A form issued by the Police Department requiring parents' signatures serves as a waiver to release boys and girls for Junior Traffic Patrol service.
4. Periodic evaluation of the operation and accomplishments of the patrol is essential.
5. Pupils selected to serve on school patrols might be congratulated on their appointment by letter. The safety patrol sponsor should acquaint patrol members with rules, responsibilities, duty schedules, and other pertinent information.
6. Ceremonial functions such as beginning the school year, meetings, and recognition awards should be conducted in a manner that lends dignity, a sense of responsibility, and respect of peers to the patrol members.
7. Any changes in traffic patterns or controls that might endanger children should be reported to proper city and school system authorities.
